Flow Rates at Confluence Point
When two streams of equal flow rates (a+b) merge, mixing takes place at the confluence point. The peak height (recorded by injecting a dye zone that merges with the colorless stream) shown at left is immediately halved and the D- value is doubled.
The mixing, promoted by local turbulence is instantaneous and complete in radial direction, as shown in the photograph below and the following movie clip, where a blue stream of color pH indicator (a- blue in basic form) is merged with a colorless stream of acid (b), turning yellow (C).
